ages past . always searching for a way

yuta

Yuta, the male lead, is over five hundred years old at the start of the series. Born in Japan in about the year 1400 AD and raised as a normal human; Yuta grew up to be a fisherman, as was the most common profession around him at that time. One day another worker found some mermaid flesh and shared it with Yuta and his comrads. However, as the flesh is eaten all of Yuta's friends either died or turned into lost souls one after another. Yuta waited, expecting the same to happen to him, but instead was left in whole health and body. He soon put the incident behind him as he married and started to live out the rest of his life.

After some years went by, Yuta and his wife began to notice that she was always aging while Yuta stayed as young as he was since before they married. Finally realizing that something was wrong, Yuta discovers that the legend of the mermaid's flesh is true and that he is now an immortal. He is told that the only way for him to return to being a normal human again is to find a mermaid who might be able to help him. However, that in itself might not be even able to solve his problem. From then on, Yuta begins his journey through Japan constantly searching for other immortal beings and a mermaid who can turn him back to the way he was.

Even though Yuta is cursed with an abnormally long life, has been killed or died in many ways only to come back the same as he was before and cannot form long lasting relationships; Yuta is a very calm, kind and considerate man. Instead of detaching himself from the world around him and wallowing in self pity, Yuta is active, participates and always works hard despite the circumstances. For the most part of his life, before he met Mana, Yuta travels the world alone taking in the changes around him. His personality is such that when there is even the slightest chance that he might be cured or finds a companion, he becomes emotional and hopeful. During those times, Yuta falls in love easily and becomes too quickly attached to people - leading to many heartbreaking relationships in the span of five hundred years.

With Mana's introduction into the series though, Yuta is no longer alone as he has finally found another immortal companion after five hundred years of searching. To say that Yuta loves Mana would be jumping to conclusions as the series has never been entirely clear on that topic and ended before there was any real conclusion. However, it is an obvious fact that Yuta cares for Mana deeply and becomes upset when she isn't around.
